C-Suite #Career #Advice: Claudio Polla, Tintri

We ask industry leading C-suite professionals for their expert career advice. Name: Claudio Polla Company: Tintri Job Title: Regional  Manager of Sub-Saharan Africa Location: Johannesburg, South Africa.

What was the most valuable piece of career advice that you received?
It would have to be that one should never underestimate their own abilities and dreams, surround yourself with successful people and you will adapt to successful thinking and mannerisms. Always be prepared to make mistakes, as long as you learn from them.

What was the worst piece of business advice that you received?
The ‘if you want something done right, then do it yourself’ stance will rarely work and does not develop the essential skills your team needs. People need to learn in order to grow and they can only do this by doing things themselves.

What advice would you give to someone starting their career in the tech industry?
Always keep one eye on the future, the tech industry is fast paced and ever progressing, take one wrong turn and you might land up in the past rather quickly. You should anticipate where the future of technology will be.

What tips would you give to someone aiming for a c-level position?
Ultimately you need to be yourself, understand your strengths and harness them to the best of your ability. You will always need to be head and shoulders above everyone in the crowd to be noticed and make an impact. But most importantly, always listen and respect everyone; you never know when you will end up working for someone you once led.

Are you particularly proud of any career advice that you’ve given or the career route/development of anyone you’ve mentored?

I have always encouraged people to do what they enjoy as you will spend most of your life working, this will be pivotal for your personal happiness. Sometimes these people have stayed within the tech sector and others have branched off into what they have enjoyed. As youngsters we often stumble across our career path and get consumed by it that we don’t explore any other opportunities.
